Project 1B - Film and Sequence

Written/Visual Analysis

My film 'Hey, Can I Watch The Footy?' focuses around the idea of a movie where the assumed protagonist meets or interacts with someone else, who then becomes the protagonist themselves. This can be seen within my short film where the person on the couch playing video games (me) is interrupted by his dad (my dad) asking to watch the football. The swap occurs when myself stands up with my game in hand and leaves the frame, inviting my dads process of getting comfortable to watch the football into the central focus of the film. This was achieved by completely removing myself from the film and only focusing on the activities of my dad for the remainder of screen time.

In regards to the way I selected the shots to use, I chose to go for a fairly simple, straight forward and narrative driven approach. My opening scene begins with myself playing video games on the couch, giving context and scene to the story. The next scene that pushes the narrative forward is when you can see my dad walking down the hall to interrupt me so that he can watch the football. The next scenes show me getting my gaming console, leaving the room and then a series of jump-cuts play showing my dad preparing himself to watch the football, and by this point I have completely left the scene. The closing scene shows my dad sitting down on the couch, making a relieved sound and the film fades to black, therefore concluding the film.

Unfortunately, I did not get to act upon the feedback given to me due to time constraints and timetable clashes but I still feel that the film does accurately fulfil the prescribed technique being, 'Forked paths story: When the main character meets someone, this person becomes the main character that the film follows.' as I show the protagonist meeting another character who then becomes the protagonist themselves.

To conclude, I believe my film meets the demands of what was asked of us within the project brief, as well as providing a fun, light-hearted short story that I feel that everyone born within at least the last twenty years has experienced at some point or another, making it a universal experience that most can relate to and laugh at.
